How do I advocate for my child?
Would you like to advocate for your child, but don't know where to start?
Do you want to know how to find training and get certified as an advocate? Many people don't realize there is currently no certification process for advocates. But there is good training and assistance available. There is no regulation or licensing of advocates, so there are no guidelines other than your personal standards of competence.
Here is What You will Need to Learn:
You will need to:
- learn how to read evaluations and write measurable IEP goals based on evaluations and your child's present levels of performance.
- learn what the state curriculum standards for each grade/age for your child.
- know the different types of assessments and what they measure.
- learn about the disabilities and research based methodologies.
- know the laws and regulations that govern special education services i.e. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Americans with Disabilities Act "ADA", Individuals with Disabilities Education Act "IDEA", No Child Left Behind "NCLB", Family Education Rights Privacy Act "FERPA" and general education and transportation laws.
- Understand and know what is available for post secondary options and the agencies available to assist.
